Arranging a specialist for someone you look after is its own kind of stress. You are juggling their health, their paperwork, and often your own work. A little preparation makes the whole thing smoother.
What to prepare
For an elderly parent
- Talk to them first. They should agree to the appointment and to you handling their information.
- Find their policy. Insurer, plan, rider and policy number. Older plans can differ a lot from newer ones.
- List their medicines and existing conditions.
- Gather past reports: scans, blood tests, doctors' letters.
- Plan the day: transport, a wheelchair if needed, someone to take notes.
For a child
- Check which cover applies: their own Shield plan, your company benefits, or both.
- Bring their health booklet and any previous reports.
- Write down your questions before you go.
- Prepare your child in simple words for what will happen.
On the day
Bring identification, the insurance details, any referral letter, and a list of questions. Ask the specialist to explain the plan in plain terms, and ask what the next step would cost before agreeing to it.
Where we come in
We do this a lot. We check the cover, find a suitable specialist, and if you would like, a handler stays with your family through the rest of the journey.
