Many working adults in Singapore have two kinds of cover at once: medical benefits from their employer, and their own Integrated Shield plan. They overlap in some places and not in others.
How they are usually different
Company medical benefits often cover GP visits, outpatient specialist visits and sometimes physiotherapy, usually with panel clinics, referrals and yearly limits. Some include hospital and surgical cover too.
An Integrated Shield plan mainly covers hospital treatment, surgery and day procedures, plus related care just before and after.
In practice, company benefits often help most with the early outpatient visits. Your Shield plan matters most once treatment moves into hospital.
Can you claim from both?
Often, yes, for the same hospital bill. But you cannot claim more than the bill in total, and each insurer has its own rules on which pays first and what paperwork they need.
Things to check in your company benefits
- Is a referral needed for specialists, and from whom?
- Are you limited to certain clinics?
- What are the yearly and per-visit limits?
- Does it include hospital and surgical cover, or outpatient only?
- Are your spouse and children covered?
- What happens to your cover if you change jobs?
Why the order matters
Using your benefits in the wrong order, or seeing a clinic that suits one policy but not the other, can leave you paying more than you needed to.
