Your coverages
Is it usually covered?
Consultations and scans such as an MRI are often outpatient costs. Some plans may cover them as part of a hospital claim if they lead to surgery within the plan's time window. Company medical benefits may also help with outpatient costs.
Surgery such as a ligament repair or keyhole joint surgery is often claimable under an Integrated Shield plan when it is medically necessary. Which specialist you see and whether you get pre-approval can make a real difference to what you pay. Always subject to your insurer’s approval.
Long courses of rehabilitation after surgery may be partly covered as post-hospitalisation treatment, within limits set by your plan.

Questions
Orthopaedics: common questions
Should I see an orthopaedic specialist or a physiotherapist first?
It depends on the injury. A sudden injury with swelling, locking or instability usually needs a specialist to look at it first. Tell us what happened and we will help you work out the sensible first step.
Will my insurance pay for an MRI?
Sometimes. It depends on your plan, whether you are admitted to hospital for treatment, and the timing. We check this with you before you go.
